Ms. Seyan's Class
Welcome A-3 All Stars!

September 6-September 10, 2010

I hope you enjoy your long Labor Day weekend. Remember: Don't come to school on Monday!  Here is this week's agenda in a kid-friendly format, written from the students' perspective:

This week in language arts we will continue to study the story "Julius" and to work on short vowels o, u, and e. We will have new Spelling Words though, and we will start learning syllabication rules. We will continue to do the alphabetical order and syllabication activities included in the weekly homework packet together for at least two more weeks. We will ultimately be doing this ourselves at home on the first day of the school week.

We are still working with addition, but emphasizing different strategies for solving problems. We are discussing doubles and near doubles problems, adding 0,1, and 2, and using number lines, bar diagrams, and even our fingers and simple drawings. We will also be introduced to more math drills this week in order to keep our addition and subtraction facts in working memory.

This week we will continue to practice doing the Daily 5 "Reading to Self" activity. We managed to read quietly for 7 minutes at a stretch last week! This week we are working on picking a good place to sit and staying there for the duration of the reading time. If we work hard, we may move up to 10 minutes of sustained silent reading! It is hard work, though. Whenever someone does something against the rules we made for Daily 5, we have to stop, have someone model what to do, show us the wrong way to do it, then show us the right way again! After all that, we discuss it!! Our teacher thinks it would be easier if we just followed rules the first time, but we are not so sure. ;o)

Mrs. Calzia put together our Scholastic book order for us. This week, Ms. Seyan will call parents about volunteering in our classroom. By the way, she found a link to an author page that we might like. It's Dav Pilkey's page. He's the author of Captain Underpants and "Dragon Gets By", which we just read. Here's the link:

Also: We need to remember to do our Book Reports on Thursday nights! That's about it for now.
